Common issues and topics for the sector include:

  • You should carry out a risk assessment and read the sector guidance to decide on control measures to guarantee physical distancing, based on the store capacity and using signage, markings or physical barriers (for example at till points). 
  • It’s mandatory to wear face masks in shops, although there are some exemptions. This is a legal requirement, however it’s the responsibility of the individual to wear it. Shops are not required to enforce this law, but are asked to speak with customers not wearing masks, also not to stop them from entering the shop if they decide not to wear the mask.   • To reduce the risk of transmission by touching products while browsing you can encourage customers to use hand sanitiser or hand washing facilities as they enter the premises.
